The modern era of Apprentice athletics is one that can be characterized by, among other things, continuous improvement in facilities. This has been one contributor to solid successes in a number of sports.
A modern athletic center, the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Activities Center, was dedicated on May 19, 1972 and completed in August of that year. This facility, known today as the Apprentice Athletics Center, is the focal point for all athletic programs. Located on a six-acre site adjacent to the Company's engineering building, the 22,000 square-foot building includes a regulation basketball court, wrestling room, well-equipped strength training area, lockers, showers, equipment storage areas and administrative offices.
Outdoor lighting enables evening as well as daytime activities on the football field, recognized as one of the best playing surfaces in the state. Since its beginning, the center's facilities and grounds have been well-maintained and continuously upgraded to meet the program's requirements.
At The Apprentice School each athlete is provided an opportunity to develop himself or herself through the Builders outstanding physical training program and facility.
On January 17, 2014, The Apprentice School basketball teams played in their brand new home as they hosted the annual Martin Luther King Classic. The gymnasium is home to a 600-seat arena and includes concession stand, cardio room and an athletic office.

On December 6, 2013, The Apprentice School celebrated a historic moment in the history of the school as they moved into a new school building (B1919) outside of the shipyard gates. The Apprentice School building (click here for photo gallery of building dedication) is located at 3101 Washington Avenue in Newport News, Virginia.
The new building, a 95,000-square foot complex, is a four-story building that hosts all facets of not only The Apprentice School but the athletic department as well. Classrooms, computer labs, video teleconferencing rooms and the night school program are some of the components of the new school building.
The basketball gym is a 9,000 square foot complex in itself located on the first floor of the new Apprentice School building. Also on the first floor of the building is The Apprentice School Admissions Office, Apprentice Alumni Room and Apprentice School Store.
The football and wrestling teams will continue to operate out of the Apprentice Athletic Facility (B601) at 3901 Marshall Avenue in Newport News. The baseball team continues to play its home games at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.
