Four Apprentice School baseball players were named to the 2008
U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association All-American team and two more
were named to the USCAA All-Academic team at the pre-tournament
banquet on Monday night.
Senior Alan Riley, junior Kyle Center, sophomore Jonathan Dehoux
and freshman Dory Fields were named to the All-American team.
Dehoux and Center were honored on the All-Academic team.
Fields had a stellar freshman season in the outfield finishing with
a .352 batting average, 50 hits, two home runs and 33 RBIs.
He had five games of driving in three runs, four games of three
hits and had his home runs against Rappahannock CC and Bloomsburg
University. Fields had 12 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI
games and saw sometime at first base during the season. He is
from Virginia Beach and is a rigger apprentice.
Riley was honored as a catcher and is currently second on the
tea
m with a .385 batting average. The Newport News native had a
pair of four-hit games against Penn State Greater Allegheny and
Indiana University-PA and drove in three runs in three games.
He split time between catcher and designated hitter with a little
pitching mixed in. On the mound he was 1-2 picking up his
first collegiate victory in his first appearance striking out five
in eight innings against Maritime College (NY). He is a
outside machinist apprentice.
Center was a repeat selection after earning the honor in 2007 also
as a utility player. He finished the regular season with a
.343 batting average. The Gloucester native had a career high
4-for-4 performance with five RBIs in a win over Fulton-Montgomery
College. He drove in four runs against East Stroudsburg and
Maritime College and had 12 multi-hit games. Center is a
marine design apprentice and was a member of the USCAA All-Academic
team.
Dehoux has topped the team in hitting for the majority of the
season sporting a .403 batting average. He has 64 hits, 14
doubles, five triples, six home runs and 45 RBIs to lead the team
in those categories. A Mathews native, he had a career-best
5-for-5 performance with four RBIs in a win over Kutztown
University and drove in six runs hitting for the cycle in a win
over Spalding University. He joined Center on the USCAA
All-Academic team and is a maintenance electrician apprentice.
The 2008 USCAA Baseball National Championships sponsored by
Bayport Credit Union will begin on Tuesday morning at 8:30 am as
#2-seed Briarcliffe College takes on #7-seed Penn State Greater
Allegheny at War Memorial Stadium. The Apprentice School will
face Lyndon State College at 6:30 on Tuesday night.
