The 2007-08 Apprentice School athletic year was one of
many highlights. Below is a summary of the year in
review.
Sept.
8
Senior Travis Reid broke the career touchdown record with a
touchdown catch in the Apprentice School's 17-7 victory over
Frostburg State.
Oct.
20
Sophomore Sam Arnold ran for a career-high 202 yards as Apprentice
School defeated Maritime College (NY) 60-0 in the Mariners
Classic. Senior Travis Reid caught eight passes to break the
single-season reception record and his 160 yards gave him the
career receiving yards mark.

Arnold topped his 202 yard effort the week before with a
school-record 249 yards on 43 carries as Apprentice School defeated
Southern Virginia 45-14. That two-week outburst made him the
first Builder running back to go over 200 yards in consecutive
games in school history. Reid caught three touchdown passes
to break the single-season touchdown mark with 10.
Nov. 10
Travis Reid became the first receiver in school history to have
over 1,000-yards in receptions with his 170 yards in the
61-55, four-overtime loss to Chowan in the Oyster Bowl.
He finished the season with 71 receptions for 1,049 yards and 13
touchdowns which are all school records.
Nov. 15
Seven Builders were named to either the first or second team
All-Atlantic Central Football Conference. Senior wide
receiver Travis Reid became the first ACFC Offensive Player of the
Year for the Builders.
Nov. 16 The
Lady Builders open under new head coach Lanica Williams with a
78-53 win over Morrisville State in the opening round of the Great
Ships Tipoff. In Virginia Beach that night, the men take
fourth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College to the wire before falling
74-70 in the opening round of the VWC Tipoff.

The men's basketball team held off Virginia Wesleyan 76-75 to snap
a 31-game home court winning streak for the ninth-ranked Marlins.
Dec.
10 The
men's basketball team gives VMI fits before falling 112-96 in
Lexington. VMI entered the game leading NCAA Division I in
scoring offense averaging 94 points per game.

The wrestling team edged Millersville University 28-27 in the
opening round of the Virginia Duals marking the second straight
year they knocked off a Division I program in the event.

The Lady Builders basketball team outscored the visiting Lincoln
Lions 16-3 over the last 11:38 to pull out a 50-48 victory snapping
a three-game losing skid.

Sophomore Jonathan Dehoux went 5-for-5 with four RBIs and earned
the victory striking out three in the ninth inning as Apprentice
School defeated Division II powerhouse Kutztown University 11-10 in
the Builder Invitational. The five hits tied a school record
that was later matched by James Denny against Maritime College.

Eric Ruffin and Tyechia Cooke were named to the Men's and Women's
Basketball USCAA All-American teams at the pre-tournament
banquet. Jason Arrington was honored as an Honorable Mention
All-American for the men.

The men's basketball team rallies from a 60-41 deficit with 13
minutes left to defeat top-seeded Rochester College 84-72 for third
place at the USCAA National Championships.

The wrestling team won the National Collegiate Wrestling
Association Mid-Atlantic Conference title for the fifth straight
year as six wrestlers won their respective weight classes.
The title marked the seventh straight conference title and eighth
in the last ten years.

Apprentice School Head Baseball Coach Bryan Cave won his 400th
career game as the Builders won game one of a doubleheader against
Danville Community College 4-3 in ten innings.

Freshman Charles Robinson finished second at 184 pounds to pace
three wrestlers who earned All-American honors at the National
Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals in Lakeland, Florida.
Senior Justin Gilliard and freshman Thad Lloyd also earned NCWA
All-American honors.
Apr.
21 The
golf team cut 24 strokes off its first-day score to make a
12-stroke comeback for second place in the Wesley Spring
Invitational in Wyoming, Delaware. Steven Ness was the low
man for the Builders coming in fourth with a 152 total. B.J.
Maben was next one stroke behind at 153.

Senior football wide receiver Travis Reid and senior golfer B.J.
Maben were named Apprentice School Co-Athletes of the Year.
The tandem will be honored on June 23 by the Peninsula Sports Club
at its annual Headliners Night banquet.
May 12
Four baseball players were named to the 2008 USCAA Baseball
All-American team at the pre-tournament banquet. Senior Alan
Riley, junior Kyle Center, sophomore Jonathan Dehoux and freshman
Dory Fields were honored at the affair. Center and Dehoux
were also honored by being named to the USCAA All-Academic squad.
May 12-15 The Apprentice School
along with the Peninsula Pilots co-hosted the 2008 United States
Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball National Championships at
War Memorial Stadium. The Builders finished second behind
Columbia Union College.
May 14
Sophomore Jonathan Dehoux's single in the fourth inning against
Columbia Union gave him his school record 68th hit of the season
breaking the record held by Brooks Elks in 2003. Dehoux ended
the season with 71 hits.
May 30
Six Apprentice School athletes were named to the Virginia Sports
Information Directors Association Academic All-State team.
Rahshann Lewter from women's basketball, Jonathan Dehoux from
baseball, Kendall Ridenour from wrestling, Jonathon Gladden from
football, Chris Everett and Ryan Sweet from golf were honored on
the team composing of all schools in Virginia.
June 23 Travis Reid and BJ
Maben were honored by the Peninsula Sports Club as the
2007-08 Apprentice School Athletes of the Year.
Sports Information Director Jim Heath was the recipient of the Bob
Moskowitz Media Award which was also presented at the club's
Headliners Night.
