2008-09 Apprentice School Athletic Year In Review

Sept. 20, 2008: Junior Sam Arnold ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Phil Caralla threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns as the football team defeated George Mason 28-10 for the first victory for new head coach Michael Vite.

 





Oct. 11, 2008: In one of the wilder football games in recent years, junior Phil Caralla set school records for attempts (53), completions (39), touchdown passes (5) and yards (388) as the Builders fell 47-38 at NCAA Division II Lake Erie College.

 

 

Nov. 15, 2008: In a game that had everything in weather from bright sun, to torrential rain and a rainbow, sophomore Bryan Cain was named the 59th annual Oyster Bowl MVP after tying a school record with three blocked kicks as the Builders defeated Southern Virginia 37-14.

 




Nov. 20, 2008: 12 football players were named to the All-Atlantic Central Football Conference squads.  Freshman linebacker Mana Ohia was honored as the ACFC Rookie Of The Year.  Three Builders were honored with first-team selections: senior lineman Chauncey Jones, senior defensive back Robert Hannah and senior wide receiver Markim Gordon.

 

 

Nov. 22, 2008: Senior Rahshann Lewter recorded the first triple-double for the Lady Builders since 2004 as she had 18 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in an 80-51 victory over Penn State Fayette in the Great Ships Classic.

 

 



 

Dec. 30, 2008: Senior Eric Ruffin set the school single-game assist record as he had 15 in a tough 79-72 loss at NAIA Division I, 4th-ranked Concordia University (Calif.) in the Surf City Classic.

 

 

 

 




Jan. 9, 2009: Senior Cecil Lee earned his 100th career victory in dramatic fashion scoring an 8-0 major decision over his Wagner College opponent to give the Builders a 24-20 team victory in the Virginia Duals.

 Jan. 10, 2009: Lee was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the American Division of the Virginia Duals making him the second such honoree after assistant coach Micah Amrozowicz who won it in 2007 when the team took second place.

 

Jan. 24, 2009: Cecil Lee broke the school career victories record with his first round win in the Builder Invitational.  His pinfall victory in 54 seconds gave him his 101st career win breaking the mark he shared with Darrick Walker.

 

 

Jan. 27, 2009: Senior Fred Spratley joined the 1,000-point club for the men's basketball team in an 87-75 victory over Southern Virginia University.  He broke that barrier on a layup with 50 seconds left to become the third men's player in the last 20 years to score over 1,000 career points.

 

 

 

 

Jan. 31, 2009: Sophomore Valleri West scored a career high 31 points as the Lady Builders used a 23-4 first-half explosion to defeat St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 84-54 in the midst of an eight-game winning streak.

 

 

 

Feb. 7, 2009: Senior Rahshann Lewter broke the career assist record for the women's basketball team as she dished out 10 in an 81-49 Lady Builder win at NCAA Division II Columbia Union College. 

 

 

 

 

 

Feb. 21, 2009: Junior Eric Joe's put back with 25 seconds left gave the men's basketball team a come-from-behind 80-79 win at NCAA Division II St. Paul's College.  That marked the second win over the Tigers by one or two points in the season after a 63-61 home win on Dec. 11.

 

 

 

 

 

Feb. 21, 2009: Junior Jonathan Dehoux drove in a school record 10 runs as the baseball team knocked off NCAA Division II Lock Haven University 22-11 in the Builder Invitational.

 

 

 

Feb. 26, 2009: Freshman linebacker Mana Ohia was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Region Rookie Of The Year making him the first-ever Apprentice School honoree by the ECAC.

 

 

Feb. 28, 2009: Sophomore Arbry Butler set the school single-season blocked shots record swatting three in the 85-74 championship game victory over Rhema Bible College in the USS Nimitz Division of the Great Ships Postseason Classic.  He ended the season with 56 blocked shots.

 

 

 

 

Mar. 3, 2009: Seniors Eric Ruffin and Rahshann Lewter were named to the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association All-American squads at the pre-national tournament banquet in Pittsburgh, Pa.  It marked the second honor for Ruffin and the third for Lewter.

 

 

Mar. 7, 2009: Senior Rahshann Lewter ended her career with the first-ever postseason triple-double in a 63-56 loss to Robert Morris-Springfield at the USCAA Nationals.  She had 12 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds in the loss and earned All-Tournament honors for the third time in her career.

 

 

 

 

Mar. 10, 2009: 17 football players were named to the Atlantic Central Football Conference All-Academic Team.

 

Mar. 12-14, 2009: The wrestling team, along with the City of Hampton, hosted the 2009 National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships at the Hampton University Convocation Center.  The Builders garnered six All-American honors and its first national champion since 2002 to win its first team championship.

Senior Cecil Lee became the ninth national champion for the Builders winning the heavyweight championship and in the process broke the single season victories record with his 46th.

 

Mar. 21, 2009: The baseball team swept a doubleheader from Tufts University 7-3 and 6-5 marking the first ever doubleheader sweep of the Jumbos.  Apprentice School had lost 13 of the last 14 meetings with Tufts before the sweep.

 

 

Mar. 27, 2009: The golf team recorded a 300 in route to finishing second in the Apprentice School Spring Invitational at The Woodlands in Hampton.

 

 

 

 

Apr. 5, 2009: Junior Jonathan Dehoux drove in nine runs in an 18-4 win over USCAA rival Briarcliffe College.  In the process he breaks the single season RBI record raising his total to 52 in 30 games.

 

 

May 2, 2009: Ryan Wagner's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the baseball team over the University of Mary Washington 8-7 for the first-ever win over the Eagles.

 

 

 

May 11, 2009: Four baseball players were named to the USCAA All-American teams at the pre-tournament banquet at War Memorial Stadium.  Jonathan Dehoux, J.D. Drewry, Kyle Center were USCAA All-Americans, while Bryce Beale earned Honorable Mention honors.  Center was also named to the USCAA All-Academic team.  It marked the third year in a row for Kyle Center to earn All-American honors, while Dehoux garnered his second and it was the first time for Beale and Drewry.

 

June 10, 2009: The wrestling team was honored by Newport News City Council with a resolution of recognition after winning the 2009 NCWA National Championship.

 

 

 

 

June 22, 2009: Rahshann Lewter and Cecil Lee were honored at the Peninsula Sports Club Headliners Night banquet by being named Apprentice School Athletes of the Year.  Wrestling coach Bruce Shumaker was given a special accommodation for leading the wrestling team to the 2009 NCWA National Championship.
