Builders pull away from pesky Wildcats for 75-60 win

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Sophomore Antione Paige scored 21 points and set a school record for three-point percentage in a game hitting 5-of-6 as the Apprentice School held off a pesky Randolph College 75-60 on Saturday afternoon.

Paige's marksmanship hitting 83.3% from 3-point range broke the school record held by Kendrick Hall and Michael Dunston who each hit 66.7%.  He was 4-for-4 in the second half as the Builders outscored Randolph College (5-8) 36-26.

In the first half, the Wildcats hung around behind their own marksman in Pete Hamilton who hit 5-of-8 from behind the arc for 17 of Randolph's 34 points.  The visitors jumped out to an 11-7 advantage on his second 3-pointer with 17:22 left.  Apprentice School (11-8) tied it at 13-all on an Eric Ruffin layup 57 seconds later, but the Wildcats pushed it back to 20-17 on a pair of Tim Clarke free throws with 11:51 remaining.

Paige hit his lone first half 3-pointer 15 seconds later and a Norman Washington jumper with 10:44 left put the Builders up 22-20 for an advantage they'd never relinquish.

In the second half, the Builders scored the first nine points in 2:21 with an Eric Joe jumper at the 17:39 mark giving the Builders a 48-34 advantage.  Randolph had one last run in them going on a 12-3 spurt to cut the deficit to 51-46 on a Jimmy Greene layup with 12:04 left.  The Builders answered with an 11-2 run of their own pushing the lead back to 62-48 on a Jason Smith free throw with 6:45 left.  From there, the lead never dropped below 12 points.

For the game, both teams hit 50% from the floor.  Apprentice School was 32-of-64, while the Wildcats were 23-of-46.  The Builders were 6-of-11 from 3-point range (54.5%), while Randolph was 8-of-18 (44.4%).  Joe joined Paige as the double figure scorers for Apprentice with 13 points.  Hamilton had 20 points for Randolph, only managing one 3-pointer in the second half.  Greene and Tim Clarke added 10 points apiece for the first-year program.

Apprentice School now will travel to Chowan University for a 2 pm matchup on Saturday in the Jesse Helms Center.
