BUENA VISTA, VA. -- A torrid second-half shooting for the
Apprentice School men's team was not enough on Tuesday night as the
Builders fell 77-69 at U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association rival
Southern Virginia University.
After trailing 41-26 at half, the Builders opened the second
half on a 16-3 run cutting that deficit to 46-44 on a Ryan Davis
free throw with 14:19 to play. SVU's J.J. Holt made a shot to
end the run and push the lead back to four. Following a
Builder free throw Chris Pendleton scored five-straight points on
two free throws and a three to put the Knights up by eight at 55-47
with just over 11 minutes to play. Jason Smith
responded two buckets to cut the lead back to four which was as
close as the Builders got in the game.
For the game the Builders shot 31-of-60 from the floor (51.7%)
but in the second half they hit 18-of-28 (64.3%). They
damaged their chances with 30 turnovers and hitting 4-of-13 from
the foul line. Smith was the leading scorer for the Builders
with a season-high 19 points, while Eric Joe added 17.
The Builders end their regular season at home with the Great
Ships Classic on Friday and Saturday. They open at 8 pm on
Friday against NAIA powerhouse Voorhees College and end the
tournament Saturday at 4 pm against Williamson Trade School.
