NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Sophomore Ashley Johnson scored a
career-high 21 points nailing five 3-pointers to pace four in
double figures as the Apprentice School to an 83-60 victory over
Southern Virginia University to snap a three-game losing skid on
Saturday.
A tight first five minutes saw the Knights take a 12-9 advantage
on a 3-pointer from Jessica Anderson with 15:11 left.
Apprentice School responded with a 12-2 run over the next five
minutes for a 19-14 lead on a Jasmine Gerald 3-pointer with 10:11
remaining. Following Kara Hiatt free throw for SVU to cut the
deficit to 19-17, the Lady Builders ripped off a 19-4 run over the
next six minutes to take a 38-21 lead on a pair of Jasmine Gerald
free throws with 2:57 left in the half. In the second half,
the lead was never lower than 18 points and no larger than 25.
The Lady Builders were a season-best 21-of-27 from the foul line
(77.8%) and hit a season-high eight 3-pointers. Gerald added
16 points in 18 minutes off the bench, while Tamara Davis scored 14
points with seven rebounds and LaTorya Grimes added 12 points and
six rebounds for Apprentice School (6-9).
Southern Virginia University (4-8) was paced by Jasmin Johnson
with 19 points and six rebounds and Kara Hiatt with 11 points and
five assists.
Next up for the Lady Builders will be Voorhees College (S.C.) on
Tuesday night at 6 pm.
