Builders Go 1-2 Over The Weekend At The Waynesburg Duals

The Builder wrestling squad saw their first dual-meet action of the 2017-18 season this weekend at Waynesburg University, winning one of three head-to-head affairs.  Three Builders went 2-1 on the day with Sophomore Colton Messick bagging two major-decisions at 125 lbs, Junior Ty Boyd with two decisions at 149 lbs, and Freshman Ross Graham finding two pins at 197 lbs.  Junior Chad Simmons went 1-0 on the day as the only undefeated Builder, seeing limited action at 174 lbs.

In the opening session, Apprentice dropped a 35-12 dual to #24 ranked (NCAA D3) host Waynesburg.  Boyd put the first points on the board for the Builders with a close 3-2 decision at 149 lbs after three wins for Waynesburg.  After a pin and a forfeit at 157 and 165, Junior Jeff Driscoll scored a tough 4-0 decision at 174 lbs to bring the team score to 23-6.  The final win of the dual came from Graham with a first period pin to double the team score for Apprentice.

The second session saw the Builders get their first dual win of the season, with a 30-21 victory over resurgent NCAA D3 team Penn State Behrend.  Behrend resurrected the wrestling program after being scrapped over 38 years ago, bringing even more welcomed competition to the region.  After a major decision and a forfeit for Messick and sophomore Anthony Monahan at 125 and 133 lbs, Shalek Colon grabbed his second fall of the season to jump the Builders ahead 16-0 early.  Freshman Tyler Allen got to showcase his fast-improving skills at 149 lbs with a dominant 9-2 win to increase the lead 19-0 getting the first dual-meet victory of his career.  After a pin and a forfeit at 157 and 165 lbs from Behrend, Simmons hammered out his third tech-fall victory of the season at 174.  Graham was the final winner for Apprentice, having a comfortable lead, recording another first period pin.  Graham is now tied with Sophomore Zach Sintobin with eight bonus-point victories, both with seven pins apiece.

In the final session of the day, Apprentice met #9 nationally ranked (D3) Baldwin Wallace of Ohio.  Messick again showed his grit, grinding out a 13-5 major decision at 125 in the most physical bout of the day.  Boyd was the only other Builder to find a win against BW with another narrow 2-0 victory at 149lbs.  The loss now has the Builders at a 1-2 dual record to start the season.  The next dual-meet action will take place at the prestigious Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum, where they will see a variety of top NCAA div 2/3 and NCWA programs on Jan 12-13.
