After serving two stints on the football sidelines for the Apprentice School, Phil Janaro now handles a new position - Manager of Student Services, Athletics for The Apprentice School.
Janaro was coach of the Builders from 1985-87 posting an overall record of 16-12. He followed Norm Snead who was the coach from 1977-84. In Janaro's third year, the Builders went 8-2 which remains the school's best record in the last 25 years. From 2002 through the 2007 season he returned to the area helping to lead the Builders to 26 wins, including a 2006 season that saw the team finish 7-3.
His resume includes stints as head coach at Bethel (Minn.) College, coordinator at the University of Bridgeport (Ct.), recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at the University of Illinois and assistant coaching stops at Davidson College and The College of William & Mary. While at Bridgeport his teams won 21 straight games spanning three seasons. He is well known for his successful efforts not only in coaching but also in recruiting.
Janaro worked in the football division of International Marketing Group (IMG) along with the training of their NFL rookie classes for the professional draft from 1995 through 2000.
Janaro and his wife Rosa Lee have been married for 36 years and they have three children. Julia (32) is an architect in Raleigh, N.C. Maria (30), who graduated from Duke University, earned her masters from Princeton University, is married and is working as a construction engineer. Frank (28) graduated from N.C. State University with a degree in textile design, earned a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where he works in the fashion industry.
