NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School men's wrestling team wrapped up a successful opening weekend of competition at the JMU Invitational Saturday as well as the Cougar Open Sunday.
The Builders had a pair of champions in the JMU Invitational in Lucas Sumners and Jalen Terry. Terry won the 285 pound division, recording two falls and a 20-11 major decision to go 3-0 on the weekend. Sumners captured gold in the 174 pound weight class, winning over Tennessee's Spencer Kon by a 14-0 major decision in the championship bout.
Aiden Vasquez finished in second at 133 pounds, barely dropping his championship match to Ferrum's Josiah Canales, 7-6, while
Thomas Clark captured fourth in the same weight class. Owen Whitehead earned fifth place at 141 points, while Anthony Swink also finished fifth at 125.
At the Cougar Open Sunday, freshman Michael Phoutasen won the 141 pound division by recording three technical falls before an 8-2 decision in the championship match.
Lucas Vannostrand finished second at 125 pounds with two tech falls, a 12-2 major decision before falling 13-10 in the finals.
At 157 pounds, Dimetrus Wince finished in second place, falling in the finals after earning a pair of tech falls and an 11-0 major decision in his collegiate debut, while
David Norris was fourth in the same weight class, falling in two close battles in the semifinals and third place matches.
Ethan Baker earned a third place finish at 184 points after a 10-2 win in the third place match.
The Builders will hit the mats again on November 16 at Shenandoah.
