BUENA VISTA, VA. – The homestanding Southern Virginia University Knights swept the Apprentice School in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday winning the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 8-5 at Parry McCluer High School.
In game one, the Knights opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning as Mitch Mantle reached on a fielders choice to score Brandon Alexander who opened the inning with a single. Mantle later scored on a double steal and error on throw to put SVU up 2-0.
Alexander drove in all three runs in the third inning with a three-run home run. He followed that with a two-run shot in the fifth inning to go with a solo home run from Tyler Cox to lead 8-2.
In the second game, the Builders trailed 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth and made a run to cut the game to 7-5 late before the Knights scratched an insurance run for the win.
The Builders (22-14) return home to start a three-game homestand on Tuesday as they face Virginia Wesleyan College at 4 pm at War Memorial Stadium.
