Builders Place Fourth At The VA Duals

Builders Place Fourth At The VA Duals
The Apprentice School Wrestling squad competed in the 38th annual Virginia Duals this weekend, placing fourth in the American College division.  The top four finish was the best performance for the Builders in six seasons, last placing 4th in the 2011-12 season.
Hall of Fame former Head Coach Bruce Shumaker, honored with the title of Grand Marshall of the event, watched Coach Amrozowicz's young team from an unfamiliar seat in the audience Saturday seeing the builders advance to the consolation finals Saturday.  Apprentice would eventually fall to Ferrum College in the 3rd place dual 24-16.
Sophomore Colton Messick led the way for the Builders on the weekend with a 4-0 record.  The 5th ranked wrestler in the country at 125 lbs (NCWA) set the pace for the team at the start of every dual with a pin, a major decision, and a pair of decisions.  Freshman Ross Graham posted a 3-0 record at 197 lbs with three decisions of his own.
Apprentice opened some eyes early Friday, upsetting #3 seed Camden County 28-9 in the first round of action to advance to the semi-finals.  Three Builders picked up bonus point victories, with Shalek Colon recording a major decision at 141 lbs, Ty Boyd with a pin at 149 lbs, and Chad Simmons with a pin at 165.  The team gave away no bonus points in the dual, an impressive accomplishment as well.
After a tough 34-11 loss to King in the semi-finals, the Builders bounced back with a 34-14 victory over Alderson-Broaddus.  Six builders recorded bonus point victories, starting with Messick at 125 lbs.  After giving up the first two takedowns in the bout, Messick stunned the crowd with a spladle, pinning his opponent with a move usually reserved for much lankier wrestlers.  The win gave apprentice momentum that never slowed down.  Kolin Johnson bagged a major decision at 133 lbs, and Tyler Allen a pin at 141 lbs as the two freshman settled nicely into their new weight classes.  Soph Shalek Colon and Junior Ty Boyd kept the ball rolling with a tech fall and decision, both bumping up a weight class to 149 and 157 lbs respectively.  Wes Sorey andd Shakeem Lassiter rounded out the winners with a major decision and forfeit at 184 and HWT.
Next up; Apprentice will host the annual Builder Invitational next Sunday (Jan 21) at Kellam High School.  The tournament will host a variety of NCWA and NCAA div 2/3 schools.
