Builders Take 1st Place At The 38th Annual Builder Invitational

Builders Take 1st Place At The 38th Annual Builder Invitational

The Builder Wrestling squad captured their first tournament championship of the 2017-18 season, winning the 38th annual Builder Invitational with 150 team points.  Apprentice hosted 12 NCWA, and NCAA D2/D3 teams at Kellam High School in Virginia Beach.  Alderson-Broaddus of West Virginia placed second in the event with 118 points, followed by The University of Connecticuit (87.5) and Averett (77.5)

The lightweights stood out for the Builders at the event, with Sophomore Colton Messick and Freshman Kolin Johnson winning the only two titles for Apprentice at 125 and 133 lbs.  Four other Builders reached the championship finals, with Chad Simmons (165), Wes Sorey (184), Zach Sintobin (235), and Shakeem Lassiter (HWT) each placing 2nd.

The second seed at 125 lbs, Messick advanced to the finals after turning in a pair of pins, including a 2nd period pin over 7th ranked Deonte Carter of UMBC.  Colton Bethel of Alderson-Broaddus upset the #1 seed from Averett in the other semi-final to set up a rematch from last weekend at the Virginia Duals.  In the finals Messick controlled the pace to secure a hard-fought 7-3 decision, and his second tournament gold of the season.

After receiving a bye to the semi-finals at 133, Johnson recorded a first period pin over Averett to advance to the finals.  Kolin also had a rematch with from last weekend, where he defeated Curtis Cox of Alderson-Broaddus (who also upset #1 seed from Averett) by major decision at the Virginia Duals.  The script was much different in the Builder final, where Johnson trailed cox 9-8 in the closing seconds before finding a reversal shortly before time expired.  The win was Johnson's first championship of his college career.

Despite not capturing the title, Simmons had an excellent day on his way to the finals.  After a pin in the first round, Chad won a back and forth battle with 7th ranked Peter Becher of ECU 8-7 in the quarter-final.  In the semi-final Chad recorded a major-decision over 3-time All American Joe Staley of JMU.  In the final, a third rematch of the Alderson-Broaddus dual last weekend, Chad dropped a narrow 5-3 decision to Logan Shurina, an improvement from the major-decision loss the previous week to Shurina.  Chad now leads the team with 11 bonus point wins.

Like Simmons, Sophomore Zach Sintobin had an impressive run to the finals.  After a pin in the quarter-final, Zach found a headlock over defending NCWA National Champion and 1st ranked Stevan Webb of UConn, and was able to safely defend a comfortable lead.  Sintobin dropped a 6-1 decision in the finals to Bryce Hanley of PS Dubois.

Senior Shakeem Lassiter entered his first tournament competition of the season and had the best finish of his long career. After a bye to the semi-finals, "Shak" hammered out a 22-7 tech-fall (almost unheard of in the HWT division) to advance to the finals before falling to Averett.

141- Shalek Colon 4th Place. 2-2 record with a pin

141- Tyler Allen 6th place. 3-3 record with 2 pins

174- Jeremy Mosely 3rd place. 4-1 record with 3 pins and a major-dec
