Box Score Elizabeth City, NC – After winning their quarterfinal game on Tuesday night, the Apprentice Women's Basketball team earned a trip to tonight's semifinals against Mid-Atlantic Christian University. The two teams have met twice this season, with the Mustangs coming away with the wins, but today was a new day and an opportunity for the Builders to advance to Saturday's Championship Game.
The first quarter began with MACU taking a quick lead, 2-0 but Apprentice tied it up and then Jordan Wilson drove the basket, giving them the lead, 4-2. The Mustangs would tie the game back up and force a turnover, allowing them to convert a fast break layup to go back ahead, 6-4. However, the Builders found their offense and proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to take the lead, 14-6. They would continue their run as Ashawnti Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to go up by double-digits for the first time in the game. The Mustangs pulled to within 7-points and that is how the quarter would end, with Apprentice leading 16-9. In the second quarter, MACU continued to chip away at the lead and eventually pulled ahead, 20-18. They kept that lead and as the half came to an end, the Builders trailed by a score of 28-22.
The Mustangs were able to go up by 8-points in the third quarter, but Ashawnti Williams kept the score close with an basket underneath. Two free throws by Jordan Wilson trimmed the lead to 6-points to end the quarter. Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter, MACU gained the momentum and took an 11-point advantage, 55-44. It would stay that way the rest of the game and as the buzzer sounded, Apprentice's season came to an end as they fell by a final score of 64-52.
With the loss, Brittney Jones ends her career with the Builders after having a solid season as the anchor of the team. Apprentice also has a number of young players returning so the future is bright for the program. Thank you to Builder Nation for all the support this year and the teams looks for great things on the horizon.
