NEWPORT NEWS - After falling behind 17-0 early, the Apprentice School football team scored 21 straight to get back into the game only to fall after a late Army Prep drive ended in a touchdown to pull ahead by the final 31-27 score Saturday afternoon.
Army Prep scored on their opening drive of the afternoon as Tim Kloska broke a 62-yard run to open the scoring. After Bryson Hosea kicked a field goal on the next drive, Briggs Bartosh joined in for the visitors, blocking a Builder punt and returning it 33 yards for a 17-0 start.
The Builders answered with five seconds left in the first as
Mason Tatum ran in from two yards out just a moment after he linked up with
Ta'Kevion Petty for a long pass that set up the touchdown. On the next Apprentice drive, Petty ran wide open for Tatum to find him for a 44-yard score to take a 17-14 deficit into the locker room at half.
Apprentice held on the Army Prep opening drive, setting up
Tim Blair to run wide open down the middle of the field for the go-ahead touchdown. On the ensuing drive, Army Prep ate up 9:30 of game clock over 17 plays to score on a DC Creecy 1-yard plunge to retake the lead.
The Builders bounced back with
Jeremiah Morgan kicking field goals of 40 and 43 yards to push Apprentice back out in front with under four minutes to go, but Army Prep responded by getting Bartosh into the open and down the sideline for the go-ahead score. The Builders had one more shot on offense, but the Army Prep defense held on four straight plays to seal the win.
Tatum went 19-for-31 for 355 yards while rushing for 50 more yards. He threw two touchdowns and rushed in for another. Apprentice had two 100-yard receivers on the day as Petty and Blair each went over the century mark.
Apprentice will look to bounce back on Senior Day next weekend as Hocking comes to town. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. with senior day festivites to take place prior to kickoff.
