NEWPORT NEWS - A 16-7 third quarter gave Cheyney the advantage as they took down the Apprentice School women's basketball team, 51-46, Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Great Ships Classic.
The Builders led by four at intermission before the Wolves ramped up the pressure, forcing 13 Builder turnovers in the period to seize control of the game. Apprentice trailed by nine with under a minute to go but never gave up, trimming the lead to three and had a shot to tie the game with under five seconds to go before Cheyney held on for the win.
Jada Bryant had a double-double to lead Apprentice, scoring 12 points with 13 rebounds.
In the other women's game in the tournament, Washington Adventist took down Clinton, 68-51.
The Builders are back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Clinton on the final day of the Great Ships Classic.
