• The Apprentice School will take the field Saturday against Washington & Lee for Homecoming 2023. The game has been moved to Sunday due to the tropical cyclone that moved through Hampton Roads Friday and Saturday.

• The Builders will tangle with the Generals in Newport News for the first time in the all-time series.

• The Apprentice School football team erased a 21-point deficit and took the lead, but Moravian put together a perfect drive late in the fourth to escape with a 29-28 win.

• After a scoreless first quarter, the Hounds punched in the game’s opening score on a 10-yard run with 5:02 to play before halftime. After getting the ball back, Moravian found a way to score again on a 37-yard pass with just 38 seconds left until halftime to lead 14-0 at the break.

• The Greyhounds opened up the third quarter with another deep passing score before Apprentice finally got on the board on a Mason Tatum 4-yard rushing touchdown to cut the lead to 21-6 after a blocked point after.

• It was all Builders for most of the fourth quarter as Tatum hooked up with Ricardo Corpus for a 14-yard touchdown and two-point conversion that trimmed the lead to 21-14. AS tied the game up just two minutes later as Tatum found Ta’Kevion Petty for a 42-yard touchdown with 9:13 left on the clock. Apprentice wound the clock down on their next possession to 1:49 when Tatum powered his way in from three yards out to give the Builders their first lead of the game, 28-21.

• Moravian answered, though, as Jared Jenkins led a two-minute drill down the field, ending with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Bingham, followed by a two-point conversion with just 19 seconds left that gave the win to the home team. Lawrence Reed nearly eclipsed the century mark in rushing, getting 97 yards on 14 touches. Tatum threw for 189 yards as the Builders racked up 398 yards of total offense.

• Following a bye in the second week of the season, Washington and Lee’s running game was on full display as they defeated Methodist University, 54-14. On the Generals second drive of the game, Anthony Crawford capped off a nine-play, 52-yard drive as he walked into the endzone from two yards out to give W&L a 7-0 lead. After the Blue and White defense forced its’ third punt of the quarter, Stephen Murrin connected with Evan Novak for a 38 yard gain which led to a seven yard touchdown scamper for Cameron Reed, giving the Generals a 14-0 lead.

• Feeding off a Generals’ mistake, Methodist quarterback Brandon Bullins capped off a seven-play, 50-yard drive with a 23-yard passing touchdown to Thomas Wade III to cut the W&L lead to seven. The W&L offense only needed four plays to respond as Jacob Romero snuck around the right side and streaked up the field for a 36-yard touchdown to put the Blue and White up 21-7.  Methodist’s next drive ate up 6:41 of the game clock as they marched 72 yards down the field on sixteen plays which ended on a one-yard rushing touchdown from Keyshaun Pete.  A six yard rushing touchdown from Burke Cigelske gave the Generals a 27-14 lead heading into halftime.

• Following a 23-yard return from Cigelske on the opening kickoff of the second half, the Generals used a 15-play, 67-yard drive to extend their lead to 20 as Murrin found Novak all alone in the endzone for an eight yard score. Starting their drive at their own 20 yard line, Marcus Payne and Giorgio Antonacci both rushed for 11 yards before Payne broke off a 58-yard rush to give the Generals a commanding 41-14 lead with 13:27 left in the fourth quarter. Payne sealed the deal with a 17-yard rushing touchdown to put W&L up 54-14 with just five minutes remaining in the game.

• The Generals recorded 535 yards of total offense on 66 plays. The last time the Blue and White had over 500 yards in a game was on Oct. 1, 2022 in a 31-0 win over Averett University.

• This will be the third meeting all-time between the Generals and Builders.

• Both previous meetings took place in Lexington.

• Washington & Lee won the first meeting in 2015, 56-21. Apprentice trailed 21-14 after one quarter and 35-21 at halftime.

• In the second meeting, the Generals used a big fourth quarter to pull away and win 42-13. Apprentice trailed 14-10 at halftime and 21-10 after three quarters.
