• The Apprentice School football will open the 2023 road slate at Buffalo State on September 9 at Coyer Field.

• The Builders lost their first season opener since 2017 in a 34-14 loss to Averett last week at home.

• Buffalo State has lost 25 straight games, dating back to a 13-7 win against Rochester on October 19, 2019.

• The Builders dropped a 34-14 decision to Averett Saturday afternoon in the 2023 season opener.

• The Cougars struck first as Bryce Jackson took advantage of a short field to cap a quick drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and put Averett up midway through the first quarter. Apprentice answered early in the second quarter when Kamron Jackson plunged in from four yards out to tie the game up.

• Six minutes later, Mason Tatum snuck in from a yard out to put the Builders up, 14-7, but Averett answered with a field goal as time expired in the first half to cut into the lead and take momentum into the intermission.

• Averett kept the momentum in the second half on both sides of the football, opening the second half with an Isaiah Lytton 16-yard touchdown run to take a 17-14 lead. After another field goal six minutes later pushed the lead to six, the Cougars buckled down, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns in the final four minutes of the game to get the season opening win.

• Jackson led the Builders with 115 yards on the ground, accounting for over half of the Builders’ 204 yards rushing.

• The Bengals dropped their season opener to Brockport in the I-90 Bowl by a score of 42-6.

• After Brockport returned the opening kickoff out near midfield, the Golden Eagles embarked on a nine-play drive to open the scoring with a 3-yard quarterback keeper by Todd Simmons.

• After a Bengals’ three-and-out, the Golden Eagles punched in a 5-yard run for another score.

Sciandra got Buffalo State on the board with a 22-yard field goal, set up by 24 yards rushing on the drive by Wilson. Brockport scored another touchdown on a 42-yard punt return touchdown to take a 21-3 lead into halftime.

• The Bengals opened the second half on an 11-play, 53-yard drive, which Sciandra finished off with a 40-yard field goal. Brockport responded with a touchdown drive, then added a pair of late scores to put the game out of reach.

• This will be the third meeting that the Builders and Bengals have matched up with Buffalo State winning the previous two meetings.

• Buffalo State won the first ever meeting on October 23, 2004, in Newport News by a 30-19 score.

• One year later on October 22, the Bengals shut out the Builders in Buffalo, 27-0.

• The two games were conference games when both teams were affiliated in the same conference.
