Baseball Sweeps Sunday Twinbill to Clinch Series

HAMPTON - The Apprentice School baseball team trailed just twice Sunday by a single run in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Mont Alto, winning 11-5 and 11-3 on the day.

In game one, the Lions were first to the scoreboard in the top of the second, but the Builders answered immediately with a six-run second, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Nolan Edwards that opened the scoring of the inning. After PSU scored twice in the third to cut the lead down to 6-3, Apprentice scored a run in the third on a Riggs Ellis RBI double and four runs in the fourth off a Connor Gregory RBI single, a two-run double from Nate Yeary and a RBI double from Camden Weston.

Dawson Adams got the win in the opener, throwing three innings of relief and giving up just one run while fanning four.

In the nightcap, the Builders jumped onto the scoreboard in the first on an Ellis RBI single, but Mont Alto took the lead with single runs in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead. Apprentice answered in the bottom of the third, plating three runs in the frame to jump back out in front, 4-2. The Lions cut the lead to one in the sixth, but AS exploded in the bottom of the frame, plating seven runs off three hits and three PSU errors to stretch the lead to its final score.

Jake Tiller was credited with the win, throwing 2.2 innings of relief. Sheldan Ciucci tossed the opening three innings and allowed just two runs off four hits. Jaeden Anderson got the save, throwing the last 1.1 innings.

The Builders will hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday when they travel to Bryant & Stratton-Virginia Beach for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
