Baseball Clinches Series Against Saint Vincent With Saturday Split

HAMPTON - With a split on Saturday in the series finishing doubleheader, the Apprentice School baseball team clinched its season series against Saint Vincent.

The Builders fell to the Bearcats in a high scoring affair in game one of the day. Saint Vincent stormed out of the gates with three runs in the top of the first, but Apprentice began to claw back, scoring a run in the bottom of the frame off a RBI groundout to cut into the lead. After SVC got that run back in the third, the Builders started to pile on runs, scoring off another RBI groundout in the fourth to make the score 4-2.

Apprentice continued to score runs in the fifth, plating two in the frame to tie the game on a Nolan Edwards RBI single and a Caleb Russell RBI double. The Builders took the lead in the sixth with three more runs coming from a Camden Weston single, a Jeremy Harmon double and another Edwards single. SVC had the big answer, though, in the seventh, scoring six runs to take a 10-7 lead. The Builders found one in the bottom of the inning on a Jett Winslow double but got no closer to drop the opener.

In the nightcap, the Builders again found themselves down early as Saint Vincent scored a run in the top of the first, but Apprentice answered in the second off a Riggs Ellis RBI single and a pair of runs on a Matt Phoebus single to take a 4-1 lead. The Bearcats took the lead in the fifth by plating four runs off a pair of AS errors, but the Builders answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring off a passed ball and a balk to take a 6-5 advantage. SVC got runners on second and third in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Jaeden Anderson slammed the door to get the win.

The Builders will be back in action on Friday as they play host to MACU in New South Athletic Conference action at 1 p.m.
