PETERSBURG, Va. - The Apprentice School baseball team split a Friday doubleheader against New South Athletic Conference opponent Virginia State, winning game one before falling in game two.
After the Trojans scored via wild pitch in the first, the Builders tied the game in the second on a
Brayden Heath RBI single, starting the run of the final seven runs of the game. Apprentice took the lead in the fourth on a
Caleb Russell RBI single before
Jett Winslow drew a bases loaded walk and
Nate Yeary got his own RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.
The Builders added single runs in each of the final three innings of the game, the first on a passed ball in the fifth before Cam Weston singled to score a run in the sixth and Heath drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to win, 7-1.
Nick Redman (5-0) fanned seven Trojans in the win, going six innings and allowing just three hits.
In game two, VSU scored five runs, two in the second and three in the sixth before Apprentice got on the board in the seventh, scoring their only run of the contest on a wild pitch in a 5-1 loss in the nightcap.
The Builders and Trojans will meet again on Friday, April 5, for a twinbill at War Memorial Stadium.
