LEXINGTON, Va. - The Apprentice School football team found themselves down just six after a second half opening touchdown, but Washington & Lee went on to score five straight touchdowns on their way to a 68-28 win Saturday afternoon.
The Generals totaled 465 yards of rushing in their first win of the season. However, WLU started off the game with a play action pass on their first play of the game to get the ball inside the 10-yard line, setting up the opening score.
The Builders went right down the field in response as
Jasiah Beacham caught his first of two touchdowns in the first half to tie the game up at 7-7. Washington & Lee answered by scoring a rushing touchdown late in the first half before blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown to get a 21-7 lead. After forcing the Builders three-and-out, the Generals found the endzone again before halftime, but they left just enough time for
Grant Swanger to find Beacham for 68 yards and a Builder score right before halftime.
Apprentice started the second half with a four-play drive that ended with
T.K. Petty in the back of the endzone to trim the lead to 27-21, but five straight General touchdowns quickly put the game out of reach.
The Builders got on the board one more time as
Alkendric Overton scampered in from 16 yards out with 5:46 to go.
Swanger threw for 341 yards on the day, good for the seventh most in a single game in program history. Beacham's 176 receiving yards is 10th most all-time in a single game.
