DANVILLE, Va. - The Apprentice School men's basketball had an opportunity to hit the game winning shot Saturday, but a timely steal from Averett gave them a 62-61 win at home to knock off the Builders.

Trailing by five with 90 seconds to go, 62-57, the Builders clamped down defensively and pulled within a possession on a Wayne Hedgepeth layup with 22 seconds left. After a pair of missed Cougar free throws, Apprentice went the length of the floor and got a layup from Jahlil Hope to cut the lead to one. The Builders forced a turnover with 2.1 seconds to go, but Averett stole the ensuing inbounds pass to escape with the win.

The Builders had led the game by as six early on in the contest before the Cougars led a majority of the second half before the back and forth ending.

Hope led the Builders with 13 points, while Shamon Rosser added 12.

The Builders next contest will be on December 1 in exhibition action against Hampton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
