MILTON, Fla. - The Apprentice School men's basketball team had little issue in the quarterfinals of the New South Athletic Conference tournament Friday evening as they cruised to a 102-71 win over South Carolina Christian.
In the win, the Builders set a new program record for rebounds in a game, pulling down 74 rebounds to beat the previous record of 68 that has stood since the 2010-11 season. Apprentice held a 74-37 advantage on the glass, including pulling down 31 offensive boards.
After the first five minutes went back-and-forth, the Builders buckled down defensively and kept the offense flowing to go on a 15-0 run over a four minute spurt to stretch a 15-14 lead to 30-14 midway through the first half. Apprentice led 57-38 at intermission before the Gladiators opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run to trim the lead down, but the Builders kept pushing, hitting shots every time S4C started to gain momentum to get the 31 point win.
Donovan Means led all scorers with 23 points, going 8-of-15 from the floor.
Montrell Jackson scored 21 points in just 15 minutes off the bench.
Adrion Wall and
Wayne Hedgepeth each put up 12 points with the latter getting a double-double with 12 boards.
Jahlil Hope added 11, while
Xavien Hunter also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Builders advance to tomorrow's semifinal round to take on top-seeded and regular season champion Lighthouse Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (3 p.m. CST).
