WILSON, N.C. - The Apprentice School baseball team swept through day one of the New South Athletic Conference baseball tournament, defeating Lighthouse Christian and MACU to advance to the semifinals.
GAME 1 - AS 8, LCC 6
After the Makos opened the scoring in the third inning, the Builders answered scoring three runs off a pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Lighthouse responded immediately with four runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to push their lead to 6-3 before Apprentice exploded in the bottom of the sixth.
The Builders loaded up the bases to set up
Matt Phoebus for a two-run single, followed up shortly by Cam Weston's RBI single that tied the game up at 6-6.
Jett Winslow doubled on the next at bat to give the third-seeded Builders the lead for good.
Isaac McCallister went the distance to earn his sixth win of the season, fanning seven along the way.
GAME 2 - AS 7, MACU 5
Again, the Builders fell behind early as MACU scored a run in the bottom of the first, but in the very next frame, the Builders got to the Mustang starter, scoring four in the top of the second.
Landon Turner got things started by tying up the game on a RBI single before Weston and Winslow had back-to-back RBI doubles to push the lead out to 4-1.
MACU answered in the bottom of the inning with a run, but Apprentice wasn't done yet as Phoebus blasted a three-run homer in the third to take a 7-2 lead. The Mustangs added three runs in the fifth to draw closer, but the AS pitching staff shut the door and didn't allow any more chances through the final two innings.
Zander Mizelle got the win, while
Jaeden Anderson earned his seventh save of the season.
The Builders will be back in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals. A win pushes Apprentice to the championship game, while a loss would force a Saturday morning elimination game.
