NEWPORT NEWS - It was a tough day on all three sides of the football as The Apprentice School football team fell to North Carolina Wesleyan Saturday afternoon, 49-16.
The Builders went just 1-for-12 on third downs in the contest, marking the first time the Bishops have ever beaten the Builders.
Nahir Seagraves got things rolling for NCW, scoring from the 1-yard line one play after the Bishops blocked a Builder punt to take a 7-0 lead. Five minutes later, he once again punched it in from the 2-yard line to double the lead.
Kendall Hunt responded for Apprentice, capping an 8-play drive with a 3-yard rushing score to trim the lead to 14-7, but the Bishops started pouring it on from there. Seagraves found his third rushing score of the night, this time from 22 yards out, before Marti McKnight broke free on third down for a 32-yard passing score from Javier Rice to stretch the lead to 28-7. The Builders tried to get into the half at that score, but another punt was blocked and the play resulted in another Bishop score to push the lead to 35-7 at intermission.
Seagraves scored his fourth and final touchdown of the day on the first play of the second half on a 76-yard sprint, and eight minutes later, quarterback Colten Newsom scrambled down the sideline to score the Bishops' final touchdown of the day on a 31-yard run.
The Builders got a safety and another Hunt touchdown in the fourth quarter to get to the final score.
Hunt finished the day 12-for-15 passing for 92 yards, adding 19 yards on the ground with the two touchdowns.
The Builders will look to bounce back in their New South Athletic Conference opener next week against South Carolina Central Christian. Kickoff for Homecoming is set for 1 p.m.
