NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School men's basketball team has a chance to win its third New South Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in four years after they knocked off third-seeded and eighth-ranked Atlantis Saturday evening, 68-57.
The Builders built a 9-0 lead right out of the gate and extended that lead to as many as 14 points at the midway point of the half before the Atlanteans started to battle back. Atlantis kept chipping away at the lead and got it all the way down to two by halftime and took the lead by scoring the first 11 points of the second half.
Apprentice seemed unphased by the run, scoring the next 10 points to regain the lead at 41-40. The two teams battled for a while before the Builders finally pulled away with a 15-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes of the second half to punch the ticket to the championship game.
Jahlil Hope and
Jabari Brackett led the Builders with 14 points each, while
Devon Brown had a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Shamon Rosser also had 10 points for the home team.
The Builders will now face off against top-seeded URBE in the final tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
