HAMPTON - The Apprentice School baseball team earned their 23rd win of the season this weekend in a four-game sweep of Virginia State, improving to 9-1 in New South Athletic Conference action.
The Builders opened the weekend with a 4-2 win, scoring in the first inning on a
Jackson Thomas single before putting three on the board in the third inning. Thomas pushed the first run across on a double before
Seth Harrison sent him home with a single. After
Baker Green came on as a courtesy runner, he proceeded to steal second and then sprint the other 180 feet on a pair of Trojan throwing errors.
Apprentice saw their offense explode in game two, winning 15-0 on the back of a 10-run first inning. In total, 15 batters came to the plate in the frame, scoring the 10 runs on eight hits and an error. Three more crossed home in the second on a
Nate Yeary bases clearing double before a bases loaded walk in the third and a Harrison double in the fourth wrapped up the scoring.
The Builders came back Saturday with another sweep, winning 4-2 and 5-4. The day opened with the Builders scoring their four runs in two pairs. The first inning saw
Jaeden Anderson and
Jett Winslow get RBIs before Anderson and Thomas singled back-to-back in the third inning to get the runs. In the final game of the series, Apprentice had a 5-2 lead headed to the seventh and held off a furious Trojan rally to gain the win.
The Builders hit the field again on Friday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Regent at War Memorial Stadium.
