BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Apprentice School baseball team finished off a season sweep of Southern Virginia Saturday, winning big in both halves of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
GAME 1 - AS 9, SVU 3
The Builders wasted no time getting the offense going in game one, putting up six runs in the top half of the first inning. After
Nate Yeary led off the game with a triple,
Seth Harrison brought him home with a RBI single to take the early 1-0 lead.
The inning kept going with
Jaeden Anderson and
Drew Barbosa each getting infield singles to load up the bases for
Aidan Walker to hit home two runs on a single up the middle before
Jordan Higgins cleared the bases with a three-run bomb that put the Builders up, 6-0.
Harrison led off the second inning with a solo shot to take a 7-0 lead and hit another homer in the fourth to stretch the lead a run further. A Yeary single in the fifth to score
Jackson Thomas in the fifth was the end of the scoring for the Builders. SVU hit a pair of homers in the bottom of the fifth to get their three runs.
Nick Redman (4-0) got the complete game victory, allowing just five hits along the way. He fanned six of his 28 batters faced.
GAME 2 - AS 11, SVU 4
The Knights were first to the scoreboard in the second half, getting a RBI double in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Apprentice answered in the third, scoring on a pair of RBI doubles from Anderson and
Isaac McCallister to take a 2-1 lead.
SVU answered in the bottom of the frame, getting a two-run homer on the third batter of the inning and a sacrifice fly on the sixth to retake the lead at 4-2. That was the end of the line for the Knights as the Builders quickly retook the lead in the fourth.
After Barbosa and Thomas each earned free passes and
Baker Green singled to load up the bases, Yeary cleared the bags with a double down the line in right to earn the lead back. A Knight error later in the frame allowed Yeary to score and stretch the lead to 6-4.
Two more Builder runs came across in the sixth on another Knight error before Harrison finished his great day at the plate with a three-RBI double in the seventh to get to the final score.
Brayden Hayes (2-0) got the win in relief, going 3.2 innings with five punchouts. He allowed just three hits, one run and two walks.
The Builders will be back in action on Friday at home to start a four-game set against Saint Vincent.
