Elton Brown enters his seventh year with the Builders and fourth season as Assistant Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator.
Brown has seen great success as the Builder’s Offensive Coordinator since he has taken over and can arguably be considered one of the best play callers in school history. Under the guidance of Brown the Builders offense has averaged close to 30 points a game since he took over. Brown has broken many of the schools offensive records in just a few years at the helm. Brown’s former quarterback Mason Tatum etched his name in the school’s record books on many occasions solidifying him as one of the best signal callers in Apprentice School history.
Tatum owns the records for: Most passing yards in a game (455 yards), Most touchdowns in a game (6), Most career passing yards, Most career passing touchdowns, Most career total touchdowns responsible for and Most career offensive yards.
Brown’s offense averaged 38 points per game during the 2022 9-1 season (Best Record in School History).
Notable Games as Offensive Coordinator
- September 11 ,2021 – First Win as Offensive Coordinator with a 34-27 win over Brevard
- September 17, 2022 – Biggest win in school history with a 38-35 win over Christopher Newport University
- October 29, 2022 – Set single Game passing record (423 yards) & 501 total yards was 8th best in school history
- October 11, 2022 – Set single season passing record (1900 yards) with win over Sussex College
- November 19, 2022 – Win over Bridgewater in the Neptune Bowl secured the most successful season in school history (9-1). Also racked up 521 total yards of offense.
- November 4, 2023 – Set records for most passing yards (465) and most passing touchdowns (6) in a game. Also quarterback Mason Tatum set records for career passing yards, career passing touchdowns career total touchdowns and career total offensive yards.
Playing Career
Brown was selected with the 111th pick in the 2005 National Football League Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Brown retired from the National Football League in 2010.
Elton Brown was born in Newport News, Va. Elton was a two year letterman in football, basketball and baseball at Heritage High School and lettered one year in football, basketball and baseball at Hampton High School. Brown accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Virginia. On the field he was a team captain (2004) and also considered one of the top offensive linemen in school history, consensus first-team All-American as a senior. Foundation, Associated Press, The Sporting News, ESPN.com, SportsIllustrated.com, Rivals.com and CSTV. University of Virginia retired Brown’s jersey on September 24, 2011.
Prior Coaching Career
Brown joined the Builders with eight years of coaching experience of various levels, which includes Offensive Line coach at Phoebus High School, Assistant Head coach/Offensive Line coach at Warwick High School, and Head Coach of the Diamond All-American Senior Game (2015-17).
Personal
Brown started the 1st & G.O.A.L. (Giving Opportunities at Life) Foundation (2005) in order to bring awareness to the importance of Education, Mentorship, Community Outreach & Fitness Awareness. To date the 1st & G.O.A.L. Foundation has organized Thanksgiving & Christmas Day feedings annually, Toy drives, Coat Drives, back to school events, adopt a classroom, speaking engagements, camps & plenty more. Brown has been a pillar in his hometown and has been honored, by both the city of Newport News and the city of Hampton, for his charitable work in the community. Brown is the President and Co-Founder of Shutdown 757 youth organization. Shutdown 757’s mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential though the core values of integrity, honor, and respect. Brown also serves as President of Shutdown 757.
Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from The University of Virginia and received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a second Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University.
