Joey Maben

A former Apprentice School golf team member, Joey Maben will be starting his 16th year as the head coach of the Builders.

Maben, who graduated from The Apprentice School in 1982 as a pipefitter apprentice, played for legendary coach Glenn Heath from 1978-82. He was a member of the Kecoughtan High School golf team in 1975-76 before being hired into the pipe department of the shipyard in November of 1976. Maben was a gold athletic award winner as an apprentice.

After going through the school, Maben served in various management positions on the waterfront and retired in the Nuclear Aircraft Overhaul Program after 46 years of service in December 2022.

Through his coaching tenure, Maben's Builders have 72 match wins which include four tournament wins - finishing the 2014 spring schedule with a pair of wins. After capturing the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlin Invitational, the Builders followed that by winning their annual Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial for the first time in school history. The Builders annually compete with the toughest Division III teams in the state and also in the highly prestigious Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate.

In his 15 years, the Builders have had 13 United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-Americans including a two-time USCAA National Individual Champion in Ben Hunter. The Builders have finished as high as third twice at the USCAA Nationals under his leadership.

“I’m proud of our team as we continue to work hard in the classroom on the job and on the golf course," said Maben.
