The Apprentice School

Jaret Jystad joins The Apprentice School football staff after spending the past three seasons at Misericordia University, where he served as Wide Receivers Coach while taking on a variety of leadership roles across the program, including contributions to special teams and strength and conditioning.

During his tenure at Misericordia, Jystad helped elevate the Cougars' offense to historic heights. In 2025, the team finished 7-4 and earned a Centennial-MAC Bowl appearance — the program's first postseason berth since 2019 — while posting the second-highest total offense and third-highest passing offense in school history. Under his guidance, the passing attack more than doubled its touchdown production from previous seasons, increased passing yards per game for a third consecutive year, and featured four different receivers surpassing 300 receiving yards in a season for the first time in program history. Four wide receivers earned All-MAC recognition during his tenure.

A familiar face to Apprentice School football, Jystad returns to Newport News after starring as a quarterback for the Builders from 2019-22, where he helped lead The Apprentice School to the 2022 Neptune Bowl Championship.

Jystad earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management from Misericordia University. He is also an X32 Sheetmetal graduate of The Apprentice School, where he completed his trade certificate and the Frontline FAST leadership program.
