Late Rally Dooms Builders In 21-14 Loss At LaGrange

Box Score

LAGRANGE, Ga. – Two Michael May to Stephen Tuck touchdown passes in the last two minutes, the final one with 20 seconds left, doomed the Builders on Saturday as the Apprentice School lost 21-14 at LaGrange College.

For the second straight week, the Builders took the opening possession and went on a scoring drive.  The Builders marched 64 yards on five plays as freshman Trey Tillman connected with senior Bryan Cain on a 47-yard scoring pass with 12:46 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

After holding the Builders on two straight possessions, the hosts got on the scoreboard after a 27-yard punt return by R.J. Miles gave LaGrange possession at the Builder 41.  Three plays later, Andrecus Lindley dove in from the one to tie the game 7-all with 1:55 left in the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, LaGrange drove 61 yards down to the Builder eight and attempted a 25-yard field goal which was blocked by Daniel Richmond.  That proved to be the lone standout in the second quarter as the teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm.

In the third quarter, the Builders took a lead on a 51-yard scoring drive finishing off on an 11-yard scoring pass from Tillman to Cain for a 14-7 lead with 7:26 left.  That was Cain's seventh touchdown catch of the season which is the most in a single season since Travis Reid set the school record in 2007 with 13.

LaGrange started its game-tying drive with 6:06 left and went 78 yards on 11 plays.  May found Tuck on a five-yard scoring pass with 2:02 left to tie the game.  After holding the Builders and taking over possession with 1:27 left, they marched 55 yards on six plays as May hit Tuck for a six-yard scoring strike with 20 seconds left for the win.

Cain caught six passes for 110 yards, while Tillman was 18-of-37 for 173 yards and two touchdowns on offense.  Sophomore Aaron Finley along with seniors James Lee and Daniel Richmond topped the defense with six tackles each.  Lee had two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss, while Richmond had an interception, a pass breakup and blocked a field goal.

Apprentice School (2-6) now visits Frostburg State (1-7) to close out its Atlantic Central Football Conference schedule on Saturday, November 6 at 1 pm.
