DANVILLE, Va. - In a deep 24 team field, the Apprentice School wrestling team was able to drop the hammer and come away with a second place finish with 112 points.
Top Apprentice Placers:
In the 133 pound weight class,
Dillon Messick had a great showing, finishing in second place and scoring 8.5 points for the Apprentice School. After a bye in the first round he won by tech-fall against Ethyn Kimberlin of Bluefield College, 16-1. In the quarterfinal, he won by major decision over Giovanni DeGeorge of Liberty University, 12-0. In the semifinal, he controlled a tough won bout against Corey Messick of Roanoke College, 2-1, before falling to Jose Noble of Roanoke in the final.
In the 141 pound weight class,
Jordan Robins stole the show for the Apprentice School by placing first and scoring 24 points for the team. After a bye in the first round, Jordan won by major decision against Roanoke College's Webb Drescher, 14-3. In the quarterfinal match, Robins won another match by major decision against Division I wrestler Connor Goodman of Queens, 15-5. In the semifinal match against Mikade Harvey of Allen, he found a pin in the second period. The finals was a barn burner that went to overtime, and Robins bested Roanoke College's Dustin Smith with a beautiful double leg takedown to win the match, 4-1.
In the 285 pound weight class, Dustin Uribes had a strong performance, placing fourth and scoring 17 points for the team. Dustin started the tournament out with a fall over Dakota Farmer of East Carolina in the first period. He then found another fall against Allen University's Jervey Sistrunk, also in the first period. In the quarterfinals, he found himself in a full three period match where he won by major decision, 8-0. He went on to lose his next two matches to Mikey Lytle of Queens and Wade Wheeler of Liberty. Uribes looks much improved from last year, and should provide the A-School the anchor they need.
Other Notable Performances:
Freshman Shawn Disbennett placed eighth, scoring 13 points for the team through sheer heart and determination. He was losing almost every bout he was in and found pin falls to stay alive. He is like watching the Tasmanian Devil wrestle, a twister of action and excitement, and somehow finds his way on top the majority of the time.
Junior
Landon Kissell and Sophomore
Ethan Baker tied for eighth place, scoring a combined 18.5 points for the team in a stacked 165 pound field.
Sophomore
Josh Seaton placed sixth at 184 pounds, scoring 15.5 points for the team.
Sophomore
Owen Schuller placed eighth and scored seven points for the team.
Other wrestlers to keep an eye on:
Freshman Nate Gipson at 125 pounds has been putting in great performances and will look to make noise this coming weekend.
Freshman Grayson Starrett is on the descent to 197 pounds but is competing at 235/285 until then. He has been surprising everyone with his ability to take down giants.
The Builders will continue action this weekend. They will travel to Shenandoah University to compete in their open tournament Sunday. The Builders look to continue their success and look to improve on some performances.
