Football Sails Past Mariners on Hall of Fame Day

NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School football team saw the offense come to life as they sailed past Maine Maritime Saturday afternoon on Hall of Fame Day, 72-26.

The Builders accounted for 566 yards of total offense and were very balanced in the effort. Apprentice ran for 228 yards while Eduardo Rios threw for 338 in his first collegiate start behind center.

It was special teams, though, that got the day going as Alkendric Overton returned the opening kickoff of the game 82 yards to the house to take early momentum in the game. Maine Maritime answered after a pair of punts to cut the lead to one as Dylan Abbott found Thomas Jackson for a 26-yard touchdown pass at the 9:26 mark in the first quarter.

Apprentice responded on the ensuing drive just 90 seconds later as Ty Taylor had his first of three rushing touchdowns on the day, bursting for 34 yards and stretching the lead out. Five minutes later, Rios showed off his arm, finding Xavien Hunter for a 67-yard bomb before finding Taylor for a 26-yard passing score. The Builders weren't done in the first quarter as Rios linked up with T.K. Petty with 37 seconds to go in the period for a 46-yard score and a 35-12 lead.

Apprentice kept their feet on the gas in the second quarter as Taylor rushed for his second touchdown early in the period before Rios found Jasiah Beacham for a 29-yard score midway through the period. After a Mariner touchdown just after the two-minute timeout, Logan Eastman capped a two-minute drill with a 38-yard field goal to take 52-20 lead into halftime.

The Builders showed off the defense in the third quarter as Benny Nena got his first pick-six of the season, returning his interception 46 yards to the house to extend the lead in the only score of the third quarter. Colby Messe got into the scoring column midway through the fourth quarter with a 5-yard scamper before Taylor scored the final touchdown of the day, breaking free for an 81-yard touchdown on the next play after the Mariners scored their final touchdown of the day.

Taylor had eight carries on the day for 158 yards rushing, while Beacham led the passing attack with 150 yards receiving on six catches.

Defensively, Kasim Drumgole had a game-high 14 tackles, while Chase Gayness also finished in double figures with 10 takedowns.

The Builders will be on the bye next week before a road trip to Army Prep in two weeks.
