Men's Wrestling Gets 10 First Place Finishes at JMU Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Apprentice School men's wrestling team put 10 wrestlers on top of the podium Sunday at the JMU Invitational.

Starting at 125, Lucas Vannostrand started his collegiate career with a dominant first place finish. He started with a 25-8 technical fall before pinning James Bounds out of Garrett CC in 70 seconds. In the championship match, he scored an 18-3 tech fall over Nicholas Anderson of Garrett CC.

At 133, Nathan Gipson was the top finisher, pinning Khyson Toney of Patrick Henry CC in 27 seconds before an 11-4 decision in the semifinals. Gipson found himself in a tight match in the finals but was victorious by a 17-15 decision over Garrett CC's Camden Hull. Also at 133, Thomas Clark finished third, falling in the semfinals of the championship bracket before storming back with two pinfalls in the consolation bracket to claim the bronze.

Trey Thebarge claimed the 141 title with two pinfalls before a 21--5 tech fall over East Carolina's Aden Davis in the championship match. Robert Tovornik finished fourth in the weight class, winning three matches in the consolation bracket before falling in a hard fought bronze medal match.

At 149, Jakob Brown used two pinfalls to reach the championship match, where he faced off against teammate Amari Williams, who also had a pair of pins to get to the championship. Brown ended up the victorious party via tech fall.

David Norris picked up where he left off last season by winning the 157 bracket. After pinning JMU's Mitchell Tauber in 97 seconds, Norris won his semifinal and championship matches by major decision. Also in the weight class, Hunter Ray finished fourth and Christian Duke claimed fifth place.

Landon Kissell claimed the 165 top spot, pinning his first opponent in 75 seconds before winning 7-1 and 13-4 against a pair of Dukes in the semifinal and championship matches. Jason McKee claimed fifth place, advancing to the semfinals before a pair of losses sent him to the fifth place match.

Ethan Baker was the top finisher at 174, pinning all three of his opponents to claim the top spot. He capped the tournament with a pin in 4:28 over Garrett CC's Cole Stuchal.

David McElravy, Jr. finished first at 197, starting the tournament with a tech fall in the quarterfinals before a pin in the semfinals. He then got his quickest pin of the weekend in just 31 seconds in the championship. Riley Ingles claimed fifth place in the weight class, winning his last match via pinfall at 1:27.

At 235, Kaleb Ivie got three quick pins to win the weight class, pinning JMU's David Hughes in just 38 seconds in the championship bout. Grayson Starrett fell to Hughes by a 5-4 decision in the semifinals, but stayed the course and recorded two pins to win the bronze.

Finally, at 285, Dustin Uribes won his only match of the day, pinning Garrett CC's Jacob Beeman in the finals of the weight class in just 31 seconds.

Matthew Henson won bronze at 184, winning both his consolation matches after falling in the semifinals, while Derek Liddle claimed fifth place after dropping the consolation semifinal to Henson.

The Builders will hit the mat again next weekend at the Cougar Open, hosted by Averett.
