HAMPTON, Va. - The Apprentice School men's basketball team gave Hampton a scare by leading at halftime, but ultimately the Pirates pulled away in the second half to take a 86-68 win Tuesday night inside the HU Convocation Center. The game was an exhibition for the Builders.
A slow start offensively turned into a nice run for the Builders after the under-16, going on a 10-0 run to take a 12-8 lead at the 13:00 mark of the first half. Over that stretch, the Builders forced four turnovers over the 3:19 run.
The Pirates answered by taking the lead, but the Builders didn't go quietly, keeping the game within a possession before tying the game at the 8:33 mark with a Chris Hinmon free throw that made the score 20-20.
From there, Adrion Wall went off from beyond the arc, hitting his next three shots from distance to take a nine-point lead, 29-20. Hampton answered with a 12-3 run to tie it again at 32-32, but the Builders weathered that storm and finished the half on an 10-3 run to lead by seven at the break.
Hampton came out firing in the second half, hitting their first five shots of the half to take a 54-43 lead. The Builders finally hit a field goal at the 12:39 mark when Karree Smith hit a lay-up and drew the foul to cut the lead to 59-48. The Pirates stretched their lead to 80-56 before Wall hit a pair of threes to cut into the lead just before the under-4.
The Pirates clamped down defensively in the second 20 minutes, holding Apprentice to just 27.3 percent from the floor while shooting well over 50 percent as they pulled away in the half to get to the 18-point win.
Wall led all scorers with 30 points, while Smith added 12. Wall was 10-for-21 from the floor and 6-of-13 from distance.
The Builders will take the floor again on Saturday at home against Virginia Peninsula Community College for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The game will serve as the annual Toy Drive. Fans who bring an unopened, unwrapped toy to the game will receive free admission. Toys will be donated to the JK Foundation and Alive Church.
