DANVILLE, Va. - For the first time in program history, The Apprentice School wrestling team has won the Cougar Duals, hosted by Averett. The Builders went 5-0 on the weekend to win the event, including beating a trio of NCAA Division II teams. Additionally, the Builders went 2-2 at the Retriever Duals, hosted at UMBC.
Apprentice started out the tournament by knocking off both the A and B teams from Averett. The Builders started with a 28-13 win over the A team before cruising past the Cougar B team, 45-3. They followed that up with a 27-17 win over DII Belmont Abbey, a 53-3 win over DII Lincoln Memorial and a 30-14 win over DII Bluefield State.
Lucas Vannostrand went 5-0 on the day with a pair of decisions and a pair of tech falls.
Bruno Alves was 4-1 with a pair of tech falls and a pair of falls at 133, while
Jakob Brown was also 4-1 at 141.
Logan Eastman went 3-0 at 157,
Matthew Henson went 4-1 at 184,
David McElravy was 5-0 with a pair of forfeit wins, a pair of falls and a 6-4 decision win at 197 and
Caleb Hartung went 3-0 at 285 with a fall and two high scoring matches that ended 21-10 and 15-12.
At the Retriever Duals, the Builders started by knocking off West Chester, another NCAA Division II opponent, 40-20. That was followed by a 54-12 win over Penn State's Wrestling Club before a 26-26 loss via criteria to Marymount. The event concluded with a 44-17 loss to Garrett College.
Terrill Parker went 5-2 with three forfeit wins, a major decision and a fall.
Kyle Deguzman was 4-0 at 141 with three falls and a technical fall.
Grayson Starrett went 6-0 with a pair of forfeit wins, three falls and a decision.
The Builders will wrap up the 2024 calendar year with a trip to the Wilkes Open on Friday.
