NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School men's basketball team made a statement Saturday night as they blew out Bucks County Community College, 108-72, on the opening day of the Great Ships Classic.
The 108 point performance is tied for fifth all-time, matching a 2023 matchup against Appalachian Bible.
The Builders sprinted out to an 18-2 lead over the first six minutes and a 40-12 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half before the Centurions finally started to settle in. Bucks County CC trimmed the lead down to as few as 13 late in the first half before Apprentice hit a three to lead 49-33 at intermission.
Apprentice came out of halftime and went on a 10-0 run to start the half and pushed their lead out to 30 or more points the rest of the night.
Adrion Wall scored 30 points, hitting 8-of-13 three pointers. He added eight rebounds and five steals.
Karree Smith broke out of his slump to put up 26 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the floor. Nine other Builders added four or more points.
The Builder defense turned the Centurions over 26 times, going for 25 points off turnovers on the day. The 21 steals is tied for fourth all-time.
Apprentice will be back in action tomorrow afternoon on the final day of the Great Ships Classic, taking on Camp CC at 2 p.m. The Hurricanes knocked off Central International in the opening game of the event.
