NEWPORT NEWS - Despite a slow start offensively, The Apprentice School men's basketball team caught fire and pulled away from Camp CC Sunday afternoon for an 80-58 win to wrap up the Great Ships Classic.
Both teams struggled to get going offensively as they totaled just nine combined points through the first six minutes of the game, but the Hurricanes were the first to catch some momentum, going on an 8-0 run over a 100 second spurt to take a 12-5 lead. Apprentice answered with an 11-0 run to take the lead, which they never surrendered.
The Builders led by 16 at the break, but Camp went on to cut the lead to as few as six at the 13:00 mark of the second half before Apprentice pulled away again for the 22 point win.
Donovan Means had a game-high 15 points in just 21 minutes of action, while
Jayden Eason and
Montrell Jackson each added 10 off the bench.
The Builders will hit the floor again on Tuesday in exhibition action just down the road at Hampton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. against the Pirates.
