Baseball Sweeps Friday Twinbill

HAMPTON - The Apprentice School baseball team took care of a Friday doubleheader at War Memorial, defeating Saint Vincent in both games.

In game one of the day, it was a pitcher's duel as neither team scored until the Builders opened the scoring with a Nolan Edwards RBI single to take the lead. Jeremy Harmon followed immediately with a RBI single of his own to give Apprentice a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats answered with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but the Builders shut the door in the final two innings, getting out of crucial jams to earn the 2-1 win.

Nick Redman remained perfect on the year in his record, going 6.1 innings and fanning four. Justin Bradshaw earned his second save of the year, forcing two groundouts in just six pitches to finish the game.

In the second game, the Builders came out red hot in the batter's box, scoring four in the first and five in the second. Edwards got the scoring started in the first with a bases-clearing triple, followed by a Hunter Johnson sacrifice fly and a Riggs Ellis RBI single. The second frame saw Cam Weston bring home the first run on a single before Edwards and Ellis brought home two each on singles back up the middle.

Saint Vincent answered in a big way, finding nine runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 9-9, but Apprentice had the last laugh in the fifth as they scored four in the frame. Weston's ground-rule double scored two, while Johnson and Harmon each added one on singles. The Bearcats added one more run in the sixth on a bases loaded hit by pitch, but the door again was shut by the Builder pitching staff to get the 13-10 win.

Jake Tiller (4-0) got the win in relief, striking out three over two innings, while Bradshaw came in for the final two innings, striking out three of his own.

Edwards led the day at the plate, going 4-for-8 with five RBI.

The Builders and Bearcats wrap up the four game weekend series tomorrow with another doubleheader at 1 p.m.
