LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Apprentice School wrestling team finished in second place at the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship Sunday with
Jordan Robins winning the 141-pound championship and Zachary Ortega claiming the 149 title.
Robins' path to the title started in the quarterfinals with a 17-2 technical fall over Virginia Tech's Marcus Bluesteen, followed by a 7-1 win over Liberty's Blake Schmitt. Robins was scheduled to face teammate
Bruno Alves in the championship match before Robins was awarded the top spot. Alves finished second after a 15-8 win over Allen's Mikade Harvey and a 16-0 tech fall over Clemson's Kenneth Lambert to reach the finals.
For Ortega, the path started with a pinfall at 1:30 in the first period over Emory & Henry's Avery Almany in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he defeated Clemson's Eli Davis to set up the championship match that he won via pinfall at 2:02 over Allen's Drevon Wallace.
Caleb Olgers and
Nathan Gipson finished second and third, respectively, at 125, while
Dillon Messick finished runner-up at 133, winning his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by pinfall. Joshua Seaton claimed third place at 174, and
David McElravy, Jr., was the runner-up at 184.
Matthew Henson also was runner-up at 197.
On the women's side,
Hannah Nevaeh-Lee won at 123 pounds, while
Karmen McKnight finished fourth at 130 pounds.
The Builders will next take to the mats at the NCWA National Championship March 14-16 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
