HAMPTON - Trailing 8-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, The Apprentice School baseball team scored 10 runs in the frame and held on to defeat Camp CC, 11-8, Wednesday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium. The Hurricanes are currently ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA.
After the Hurricanes pushed a run across in the first inning, the Builders answered right back, scoring a run in the bottom of the inning on a
Camden Weston RBI single to tie the game up at 1-1. Camp responded, scoring three in the second before two each in the fourth and fifth to push the lead out to 8-1.
The Builders did not go quietly, sending 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. After the scoring started with
Nate Yeary coming home on a wild pitch,
Jeremy Harmon got the hit parade going with a RBI single to trim the lead to 8-3.
Caleb Russell and
Matt Phoebus continued the hitting with back-to-back RBI doubles to further cut the lead down to 8-6 before Yeary's RBI triple tied the game up at 8-8.
Apprentice kept the foot on the gas in the inning as Weston then doubled, Harmon singled and
Nolan Edwards doubled to stretch the lead to 11-8. From there,
Justin Bradshaw (2-1) shut the door, throwing the final four innings and allowing just four hits to earn the win for the Builders.
Yeary finished the day 4-for-5, a homer shy of the cycle. Weston and Harmon each had three hits as well.
The Builders and Hurricanes will meet again at Camp on Tuesday afternoon.
