Baseball Walks Off Senior Day Matchup to Set Single Season Win Record

HAMPTON - The Apprentice School baseball team set the single season wins record Thursday night when Jett Winslow hit a walk off base hit in the bottom of the ninth to give the Builders a 6-5 win over Virginia Peninsula Community College in the regular season finale.

The Builders are now 35-7 on the season as they prepare to be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming New South Athletic Conference tournament next weekend in Wilson, North Carolina.

VPCC took an early 4-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first and third innings. The Builders answered in the bottom of the third, scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run blast over the right field wall by Nate Yeary to trim the lead to 4-3. Apprentice tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth on a Riggs Ellis RBI double before both teams settled in.

The Gators retook the lead in the seventh, but the Builders again responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the game up on a Caleb Russell sacrifice fly before taking their first lead of the game on a balk that made the score 6-5. VPCC tied the game up in the eighth, setting up Winslow to get the walk off in the ninth on a single to left field.

Justin Bradshaw (3-1) got the win in relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings of the contest, allowing just one run off four hits.

Prior to the game, the baseball program honored Ellis as the lone senior of the Class of 2024.

The Builders will now wait on the bracket to be released for the NSAC tournament and will take on the No. 4 seed in the opening game of the tournament Thursday at 11 a.m.
