Baseball Sweeps Elimination Tuesday Games

DUBOIS, Pa. - The Apprentice School baseball team swept its two elimination games Tuesday in the USCAA Small College World Series, extending their stay as one of the final six teams remaining in the tournament.

The Builders started the day with a 4-0 win over Wright State Lake. The scoring started in the first inning as Apprentice loaded up the bases for Jeremy Harmon to get a RBI single and get the first run of the game. AS scored their remaining three runs in the third off a Caleb Russell RBI single and a Hunter Johnson two-run base hit that brought the game to the eventual final score.

In game two just a few hours later, the Builders found themselves in a battle against Penn State York. The Lions scored first in the top half of the third inning, but Apprentice answered in the bottom of the frame as Nate Yeary singled to score the tying run. Two batters later, Harmon doubled to plate Yeary and give Apprentice their first lead of the contest at 2-1.

The Lions responded immediately with a three-run blast in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, but that was the last time that PSU York scratched the scoreboard. The Builders got one back in the fourth on a Matt Phoebus solo shot; another in the fifth on a Yeary homer; and the winning run on a walk-off RBI single from Riggs Ellis that kept the hopes for a national championship alive.

The Builders will take on Miami Hamilton in another elimination game at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at Showers Field. Should Apprentice win, they will take on either Atlantis or Florida National tomorrow at 4 p.m. for a chance to advance to Thursday.
