Football Falls on Last Second Touchdown to Louisburg

NEWPORT NEWS - On fourth down and goal with the clock running out, Louisburg punched it in from inside the 1-yard line as time expired to escape with a 34-31 win over The Apprentice School Saturday afternoon on Homecoming.

The Builders were first on the scoreboard as Khamari Moore punched it in from a yard out to take a 7-0 lead. After a quiet remainder of the first quarter, Makegan Piorkowski started the second quarter with a bang on a 33-yard touchdown catch from Grant Swanger to double the Builder lead.

Apprentice's defense forced a Louisburg punt on the ensuing drive, but the Hurricanes settled in and forced a punt of their own, one they would ultimately block and score one play later to cut the lead in half. The Builders answered with a 31-yard field goal from Logan Eastman, but the 'Canes kept the pressure on, scoring just before the two-minute timeout to trim the lead to 17-14 at halftime.

The Builders came out of intermission and scored immediately as Swanger linked up with Jasiah Beacham for a 77-yard touchdown. On the next Builder drive, T.K. Petty found paydirt to give the home team a 31-14 lead with 9:03 to go in the third quarter.

From that point, it was all Louisburg as the Hurricanes scored the final three touchdowns of the game, blocking two more punts along the way. The 'Canes converted two fourth downs on the final drive, including the final play of the game on the goal line.

Piorkowski had seven catches for 114 yards, while Beacham had five catches for 96 yards.

The Builders will look to rebound next weekend as they travel to Alfred State for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
