NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School men's basketball team used a huge second half to hold off Cheyney to open up 2025, winning 85-75 Saturday afternoon.
The Builders were slow out of the gates as the Wolves used D'Angelo Lake at will in the first half to take a 41-38 lead at intermission. Cheyney went on to lead by as many as seven in the second half at 61-54, but Apprentice responded with an 18-4 run to take a 72-65 lead and held off any push from the visitors to get the win.
Adrion Wall finished with a game high 22 points, 20 of which came in the second half, while
Karree Smith put up 17.
Xavien Hunter had 11, including three shots from downtown.
Donovan Means and
Kelby Saunders, Jr., each added 10. Smith was one rebound shy of a double-double.
The Builders will again be in action on Thursday when they welcome South Carolina Christian to Newport News for a New South Athletic Conference tilt at 6 p.m.
