NEWPORT NEWS - It was a high scoring affair that nearly set a new program record as The Apprentice School men's basketball team put up 119 points in a 119-74 win over South Carolina Central Christian Thursday night in New South Athletic Conference action.
The 119 points is second best in program history, just two points behind a 121-point outing back in 2009. It is one point better than a season high 118 last year against Central International.
The Builders scored the first 13 points of the game before the Gladiators finally scratched the scoreboard with a free throw at the 16:07 mark. After pushing their lead out to 39-21 with just under five minutes to play in the first half, Apprentice went on another big run, scoring 11 straight points over a two minute span to take a 50-21 lead. The Builders led 59-30 at intermission before running their lead out to as many as 51 in the second half on the way to their third conference win of the season.
Seven Builders finished in double figures, led by
Karree Smith's 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Kurij Harrell had his second game in double figures this year with 15 points, while
Jahlil Hope ended the night with a career high 14 points.
Adrion Wall and
Davion Riddick each put up 11, while
Jabari Brackett and
Wayne Hedgepeth each contributed 10.
No Builder played more than 15 minutes in the first of three games this weekend for Apprentice.
AS will be back on the court tomorrow with a 6 p.m. tipoff set against Camp CC to kick off the MLK Classic.
