FAIRMONT, W. Va. - David Norris claimed the top spot on the podium at 149 pounds as the Apprentice School wrestling team finished second at the Fairmont State Open Saturday.
Norris got things started with a pin over Rio Grande's Ben Sloan before a 4-1 win over West Liberty's Braxton Miller in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Norris knocked off top seed Shawn Young of West Liberty by a 4-2 decision to claim the top spot.
Josh Seaton earned a third place finish at 184. Seaton pinned his opening round opponent before a 13-3 major decision win in the quarterfinals. After a tough loss in the semis, Seaton claimed third by injury default. Also earning a bronze medal was
Caleb Hartung at 285. Hartung started the tournament with a 12-4 major decision win before pinning his quarterfinal opponent. Like Seaton, Hartung fell in the semis before getting the third place finish via injury default.
Thomas Clark finished in fifth at 125. After falling in the opening bout by a 5-1 decision, Clark rattled off three straight pins to claim the fifth place spot in the division, knocking off two wrestlers from UNA along the way. Also finishing in fifth place in his weight class was
Jakob Brown at 141. After pinning UNA's Malikai Badillo in the opening round, Brown fell to the consolation bracket where he won three straight matches to get to the podium in fifth.
Ethan Baker also took a fifth place finish at 174, taking two major decision wins before a pin to claim fifth.
The Builders will wrestle just up the road this weekend at the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The schedule of matches will be released later this week.
