BOSSIER CITY, La. - The Apprentice School wrestling team captured the National Runner-Up position at the 2025 NCWA National Championships Saturday afternoon with
Bruno Alves winning the 133 pound championship.
Alves earned the recognition of Most Outstanding Wrestler. He started the tournament with a 15-0 technical fall in the round of 64 before advancing to the round of 16 via forfeit. He added another tech fall to advance to the quarterfinals, this time by a 16-0 score, and added a third 15-0 tech fall to get to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Alves took down a wrestler from Florida A&M by an 8-4 decision, setting up his national championship match against a wrestler from Thomas More, winning by a 7-2 decision to claim his first national championship.
Caleb Hartung finished as the national runner-up at 235. He started with back-to-back wins by fall before scoring a pair of major decisions, both 11-1, to advance to the semifinals. After pinning Washington State's Keelen Mitcham in the semifinals, Hartung found himself on the wrong end of an 8-4 decision to Tarleton State's Koby Kidd in the championship bout.
In total, the Builders brought home 11 All-Americans with
David Norris capturing third place at 149, while
Ethan Baker and
Josh Seaton grabbed the bronze at 174 and 184, respectively.
Landon Kissell (165) and
David McElravy (197) each earned fifth place finishes, and
Lucas Vannostrand (125) and
Matthew Henson (174) were seventh place finishers.
Logan Eastman (157) and
Jakob Brown (141) finished their tournaments in eighth place.
On the women's side,
Skylar Schaefer finished as the runner-up at 131 pounds, earning All-American honors as well. She started her tournament with three wins via fall to get to the championship match. Facing UCF's Paige Kalish, Schaefer went the distance but fell in an 8-1 decision.
In their first season as a full program, the women's wrestling team finished 11th place, just 2.5 points outside the top 10.
